What Is CMYK Printing?

CMYK printing uses four process inks—cyan, magenta, yellow, and black—to reproduce colour. By layering small halftone dots in different proportions, it can create photographs, gradients, illustrations, and detailed artwork.

For custom card decks, CMYK is a practical choice when card faces vary from one design to the next or contain complex full-colour artwork.

How Does CMYK Printing Work?

The artwork is separated into four colour channels. Each channel is printed in sequence and registered to the others. The combined layers form the final image, which can then be coated, laminated, cut, and assembled into a deck.

Prepare the file

Set artwork to CMYK and check trim, bleed, resolution, and the deck template.

Separate the colours

Create the cyan, magenta, yellow, and black printing plates.

Print in register

Apply each ink pass in alignment so type, borders, and artwork stay precise.

Inspect the deck

Dry and finish the sheets, then cut, collate, and check the cards.
